Project PL | Tie it Together with Neutrals

In my last Project PL post, I talked about giving your pages a sense of cohesion by using similar photo treatments. Today I want to share another tip to help unify your layouts when your photos cover a variety of subjects, events and locations (basically every week of my family album). …NEUTRALS… Now, I’ve always been a huge fan of color, bold choices and killer patterns, but sometimes when your photos are all over the place, taking things easy on the color front can really help tame the crazy.

In this spread I actually started out using a lot more of the reds and pinks in the MPM Charmed collection because there’s a fair amount of those colors in my photos. However, it was all a little out of control, and as I started pairing back those brighter colors and sticking to the blues (not a neutral, I know) and white, things really started coming together.

This week our photos were just all over the place – mostly of birthday celebrations, including indoor, dark movie theatre, close-ups of toys and outdoor images – phew! I turned to my standby black and white cards to help keep things under control, using mostly my Madeline papers and cards.

Melissa let my Madeline products do the heavy lifting on this page. The photos are of the same event, but the colors are a bit all over the place. By adding a few pops of color in her elements against the black and white backdrop she really tied everything together and your eye is drawn straight to the photos of her sweet son.

sonia-1200Sonia does her family album by month, so she frequently has a lot of different events to cover in a single spread. In this page, she used the neutral pieces from the MPM FOUNDATION collection to tie together two different events. Adding a bit of color to the title page of each side helps keep things organized and the simplicity of the other colors doesn’t distract from the photos.

Last week we released a bonus MPM kit PERFECT for this exact kind of scrapbooking: FOUNDATION. It has a versatile neutral palette that will make documenting the varied moments of your life a total breeze!

MPM_Foundation_main_previewSo who’s with me? Have you done this before? Or am I the only one crazy enough to think this is a good idea? I’d love to see samples from you, so link me up in the comments – I’m always looking for inspiration and ways to make my personal scrapping better and more manageable. 🙂

Love your simple style. I am a Scrapaneers Champion. I love digital scrapbooking. I’ve seen the pocket scrapbooking, but it seems kind of boring looking. I can’t figure out the difference with yours. It just looks good.

Thanks so much, Gwen – what an awesome compliment! 🙂 I think the biggest difference in my approach to PL and most people is that I go for more smaller spaces instead of the typical 3×4 and 4×6 slots. I feel like cards/photos that big are just *too* big.. KIWM? xoxo
